I participated in a “Privilege flip” with the Multicultural Center’s MAP sponsors. In this fling we stood in a straight line shoulder to shoulder and when directed to do so we would induce a quantity forward or backward. The first question was yelled expose so that the army of students could discover, “If flesh people of coloured band-aids are at least two shades off from your skin color take one step back.”
Now keep in mind that during the exercise we are to keep completely quiet, we cannot steady giggle, and our eyes are to be closed so that we could hear people moving but not know who was doing the stepping.
The questions proceed; “If you were born into a home with more than fifty books, take a step forward.” I took a step forward. “If you always had to move from your home or apartment because you could not honorarium the rent, take a step back.” I stepped backwards.
This went on for or so 15 minutes and at the end it was apparent what had happened, we had pay back segregated. The withdrawal line between egg whites and blacks was obvious to everyone who had participated and by every passer-by.
I grew up in the south and have seen the separation of races by choice. In high school the white kids sit down with their own kind and the African-Americans with theirs, as well as the Asians, so on and so on; after all no one wants to be the odd man out in their groups. Of course we all interacted with each other, but something magical happened during that lunch period.
But this activity seemed like it was set up advisedly to separate us and cause as much stress as possible. We were asked what question stood out the most to us. I hear some of the other’s comments and decided I would wind up my hand and speak up.
