social lion Finkle, a bookish nerdy man of twenty-eight, was completing his studies at the Yeshiva University in New York City. Upon his June ordination as rabbi, his next mission was to be hired as leader of a synagogue---a rabbi.
Leo had been told that his chances of acquiring a congregation would be enhanced if he were married. Leos problem was that he had concentrated on his studies and had not made time for a social life; so his marriage partner choices were non-existent.
In his haste to find a marital partner, Leo called upon the serve of a marriage broker, Pinye Salzman, who had advertised his services in a daily Jewish-American newspaper called The Forward. Leo and the matchmaker met in Leos sparsely appointed apartment. Salzman, the matchmaker, was a small man who was dress in old vestments which smelled of fish, and he carried a black, strapped portfolio.
Leo explained to Salzman what his circumstances were. Salzman began flipping through a stack of well-worn cards that contained the dossier of the hand-selected authorization marriage candidates for Leo. Salzman, piece of music studying these cards, looked around Leos room indeed delaying his recommendation of potential brides.
The matchmakers selection consisted of six-spot cards, which contained six womens personal information six potential marital partners. Leo was disappointed by the number of choices that Salzman had salt away for him. He asked if photographs of these candidates were available and Salzman indicated that although he had barrels of cards available, that he had selected the best candidates for Leo.
