In the year of 1845 a tragedy of gigantic proportions was about to unleash itself upon the people of Ireland. A different typesetters case of resistance not previously seen in Ireland was to rear its head and make its way to Irish lands. This enemy however was not the usual type of enemy that Irish people had go far face to face with in the past. This enemy did not play along with guns or cannon or swords and men ready to fight, nor did this enemy care what religion or status or mise en scene people were from, for this enemy of the Irish people was a fungal infestation that would attack and decimate the spud sever of Ireland.
At first there had been reports across Europe that there had been a strange and mysterious disease that had been having an impact on the potato harvest; reports coming from Holland, Belgium and Scotland amongst others were first noted. Then cases of the diseases arrival started to be reported in England in Kent and the Isle of Wight.
Many newspapers reprinted articles from the journal, The gardeners Chronicle and Horticultural Gazette; this was to become the atomic number 82 recognised authority on any matters in affinity to potato disease and was edited by botanist Dr keister Lindley.



On the 16th of September 1845 Dr Lindley wrote that the potato murrain has unequivocally declare itself in Ireland. # He then goes on to ask the question, Where go forth Ireland be in the event of a universal potato rot? # not knowing that the answer to this question would be answered in in the catastrophe of what was to follow. At the time of authorship in 1845 Dr Lindley and various others referred to this disease as the rot, the murrain, the blackness, the disease or the blight.
