St. Augustine is a fine urban center that has a long history. To fully appreciate the urban center I think an understanding of the past is necessary. The city of St. Augustine has been command by numerous countries and has had some important people walking the streets. Ponce De Leon discovered St. Augustine around the year of 1513. It was not real founded as a city until 1565. The founding of St. Augustine is the start-off permanent wave European city in the new world. (1) St. Augustine stayed under Spanish rule for over 200 years. During those years many countries tested to take control of the area, but failed. During this time Spain realized they requisite to garrisonify the city and built the fort that is still their today, fort Castillo de Marcos. Around 1763 Spain gave control of the area to Britain. The rule of St. Augustine by the British was very short, only 20 years.(1) In 1783 it was given bum to Spain according the to Treaty of Paris. Spain ruled again for around 37 years when it was sold the to United States to become a state.

Menendez built an establishment in St. Augustine to try to look for new lands and to help in the colonization of new lands for Spain. Spain cherished to take control of the new land for economic reasons. some other people have been famous in relation to St. Augustine because they attempt to destroy the city, such as Sir Francis Drake and Captain backside Davis and Andrew Jackson. Sir Francis Drake attacked the city during the time when England and Spain were at war in 1586. Captain John Davis attacked in 1668.
